What Places Should I Avoid When Buying Carnivorous Plants?
Wherever you buy your plants from, ensure that your plants are acquired ethically (without poaching), and are cared for properly where they are being kept for sale.
Local Collectors and Growers
If you are a legal adult you can find local collectors on the carnivorous plant forums, via Facebook groups, or at local meetups. If you are not an adult ask a parent or guardian to meet up with other growers and collectors for you.
Well Equipped Garden Centres
Some garden centres are well equipped to care for carnivorous plants with lights, proper watering, and proper potting. If you see carnivorous plants sitting in dry conditions, undersized pots, or no/low lighting it is a good idea to avoid buying from that store. The plants there will often be sick, dying, or slow to recover when you bring them home. Many new growers often get discouraged when they purchase a dying Flytrap from a garden centre without knowing.
Avoid Seeds at First
Seeds are a great way to get new plants cheaply but are often a way that many new growers are scammed or disappointed with fake seeds or incorrect seeds. For example: Venus Flytraps are not true to seed, meaning that if you are to purchase B52 seeds (the Flytrap that produces the largest traps) this will not produce a B52 Flytrap. In addition to this, many seeds are not ethically collected such as with Nepenthes which can put a strain on the endangered status of the plants in the wild.
Specialty Stores Online or Our Store
We would love it if you would shop with us on our online store but we would also be very happy if you were to choose a store that specializes in carnivorous plants whether it is online or not. This ensures that you get the real plant you are looking for and that it is happy and healthy! Happy growing!
